MKG Youth Martial Arts
Black Belt Pathway
The Martial Art Training Space is a garden in which the students, like plants, go through many seasons, where they are nourished and cared for, and where they are encouraged to help each other grow.
Welcome to MKG Detroit’s Youth Martial Arts Program at Boombox!
We are thrilled to have your family on this team! Our program is both family and community oriented, and is one that has grown and evolved organically with the support of our participating families. As a part of this community, you are encouraged to ask questions, participate at your comfort level, and offer any feedback that will help this wonderful group of Youth Martial Artists grow in a positive direction. Suggestions for events and additional programming is always welcomed as well.
Below is our signature “Black Belt Pathway”. It is uniquely our own, unrelated to the belt levels of other Martial Art schools, styles, or systems. As Martial Art is meant to be analogous to life, our program is based on the four seasons of the year, and the natural journey that life takes through their processes. We hope you enjoy the journey.
Please note the following details:
Belt levels do not denote “rank” in a traditional sense. Our program is introspective, and based on the skill and demeanor of the individual student. We do not rank students over one another. Students level up based on their progress as compared to their previous performances, not the performance of their teammates. As such, promotion is subjective, and based on the individual student’s progress, behavior, attendance, test performance, and other variables.
Time frames for level progression is not set in stone, is subject to change, and is based on the individual student. Some students may need longer to settle into their training and progress, others may progress faster than the suggested time due to exceptional attendance, performance, teamwork, and other ideals observed by their Coaches.
There may occasionally be times where students skip a belt level. This is infrequent, and based on a student arriving with prior experience, exceptional grasp of the material, and/ attendance in other programs that further their grasp of the MKG curriculum.
One student’s advancement has nothing to do with any other’s.
Testing takes place once a season, roughly every 3 months. A minimum of 11 classes in a 3-month period is required for testing, unless special permission has been given otherwise. Please see Coach Kurt with questions regarding attendance.
