THE MKG METHOD
OF JEET KUNE DO, FILIPINO KALI-ESKRIMA, AND MORE.
PRESENTED BY MKG DETROIT.
The MKG METHOD is a world-renowned Martial Arts training platform found in select schools all over the globe. With a vision toward total martial art mastery, and an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, MKG is one of the most popular martial art communities and training methods in our post-covid world.
THE MKG METHOD IS A BLEND OF THE WORLD’S MOST ESSENTIAL MARTIAL ART TRAINING METHODS, STYLES, AND PERSPECTIVES.
The MKG Method can be accessed via our weekly 90 minute training session at Boombox, and as a method of understanding what our team is all about. MKG is the driving force in both our philosophy, and our sense of community.
THE MKG BLEND AT BOOMBOX INCLUDES:
Thai Boxing
Muay Thai is the National Sport of Thailand, rooted deeply in the historical wars between the Thai Peoples and their neighboring nations. First brought to America by the legendary Ajarn Chai Sirisutre, MKG”s Muay Thai mentor, Thai-Style Kickboxing acts as the conditioning base, power generator, and defensive structure of the MKG Method.
Jeet Kune Do + Jun Fan Gun Fu
Two related fighting methods created by martial art icon Bruce Lee. Long known as an action film pioneer, counter-culture icon, and as the “Grandfather of Modern MMA”, Lee created Jeet Kune Do (JKD) in the 1960’s as America’s first “Mixed Martial Art”. Lee’s methods blend techniques from Boxing, Wing Chun Gung Fu, and Savate Kickboxing with footwork and fighting principles found in European Fencing. Much of the close-range fighting in the MKG Method comes from JKD, as does our approach to strategy, tactics, drilling, and “Fight IQ.”
Panantukan
Filipino “Dirty Boxing”, a bareknuckle boxing style that adds limbs destruction, joint locks, off-balancing, and dirty tricks to a Western Boxing foundation. One of the most unique elements of the MKG Blend, Panantukan greatly impacts our awareness of both practical self defense and historical boxing methods.
Filipino Kali-Eskrima-Arnis
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) mixes the indigenous warrior traditions of the Moro Peoples with historical Spanish and Italian Fencing, resulting in the world’s most comprehensive art in edged and impact weapon defense. MKG Detroit’s FMA curriculum includes training with 1 to 2 sticks, swords, and training daggers, as well as common household items. FMA styles like Inosanto-LaCoste Kali, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Kalis Ilustrisimo, Balintawak, and the core MKG Method of Kali Training develop attributes like footwork, coordination, visual acuity, speed, rhythm, and distance management, as well as a robust skillset in edged weapon defense.
Catch Wrestling
Historical folk wrestling popularized in the 19th and 20th century, resulting in both authentic “Collegiate/Tournament Wrestling” and the theatrical “Professional All-Star Wrestling”. Catch has a deep and fascinating history, and Combat Sports would not exist today without it’s impact. Grappling through the MKG Method is reserved for more advanced students.
Dumog
Filipino Folk-Style Wrestling that emphases self defense oriented Grappling over sport style Wrestling, with locking/breaking/control techniques that can be implemented empty-handed, or with a weapon. Along with JKD and Catch Wrestling, Dumog is a critical element of MKG’s approach to Grappling.
Brazilian Jiu Jiitsu
MKG was directly involved in the initial dissemination of the sport and art of BJJ throughout the American Midwest. Rooted in traditional Japanese Martial Arts, Wrestling, and the sport of Judo, BJJ was developed on the rough and tumble streets or early 20th century Brazil. Like Catch Wrestling, most of our MKG BJJ training is reserved for advanced students. To join Boombox’s fully-comprehensive BJJ Program, click here.
Silat
Traditional Srivijayan Warrior arts that emphasize a spectrum of sweeps/takedowns, destructive counter-offense, and non-traditional striking. Silat is a historical mixed martial art that is as beautiful as it is devastating. It greatly influences our approach to ground-fighting, as well as transitioning between standing, being on the ground, and getting back to your feet again.
MKG Total Control System
MKG “TCS” is meant to develop skills to control an opponent’s body and intention with contact to virtually any part of their body. Small joint locks and Clinch Fighting combine with Hand & Limb Immobilization in a truly unique way. MKG Detroit uses TCS and the “MKG Trapping Matrix” as a technical training platform for developing superior in-fighting awareness, speed, rhythm, and strategy. Our Matrix includes Thai Clinch, Wing Chun, Higot Hubad-Lubad, Tai Chi, Silat, Judo, and Japanese Jiujutusu.
